Boost Watch, Week 6: eleven a game away from +3
A clean Week 6 with no new injuries. Ten Future Stars played, Derrick Moore had a bye that costs him nothing, and eleven of the fourteen now need only Week 7 for a full +3. Kenyon Sadiq is cleared but quiet, and Fernando Mendoza is back to zero snaps.
Week 6 is logged, and it was a clean one: no new injuries anywhere in the set. Kenyon Sadiq cleared concussion protocol and played, Derrick Moore had Detroit’s bye, and the only card to slip back was the one that had just moved forward.
With Week 7 the last game of October, eleven of the fourteen are one appearance away from a clean +3. When Jadarian Price went on injured reserve in Week 4, the month looked a good deal worse than that.
The ten who played
ARVELL REESE — LB, New York Giants. Still the best card in the set. NFL.com’s quarter-mark rankings of defensive rookies put him at or near the top, calling him an apex predator who does not jump on piles but creates them. He leads the entire league with 26 solo tackles, and across Weeks 4 and 5 he had 21 tackles, two tackles for loss, four pass breakups and an interception. His season line is 43 tackles, a sack, four passes defended and an interception. The Giants lost 34–27 to the Saints.
MAX IHEANACHOR — OT, Pittsburgh Steelers. A fourth consecutive start, and Pittsburgh won 26–19 in overtime at Tampa Bay to move to 4–2. The job is settled.
ANTHONY HILL — LB, Tennessee Titans. Finally a win. Tennessee beat the Colts 26–20 after trailing 13–0, with 20 points in the fourth quarter. He is ranked seventh among all defensive rookies, and with the green dot in Saleh’s defense the Fred Warner comparisons are now standard.
CALEB DOWNS — S, Dallas Cowboys. Played in a 23–13 Sunday night loss to Green Bay. Dallas is 2–4 and the defense is still the problem, but he ranks inside the top three defensive rookies in the league.
PETER WOODS — DT, Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs are 6–0 after a 22–6 shutdown of the Chargers, the best team situation of anyone in the set. His bye is already behind him, so Week 7 is all he needs.
KENYON SADIQ — TE, New York Jets. The good news first: he cleared concussion protocol. He practiced in full on Friday, had a neurologist’s clearance on Saturday, and was active with no snap restriction. The production is the worry: one catch on three targets for 12 yards in a 26–19 loss. With Mason Taylor back and Omar Cooper Jr. returning from injured reserve, the targets have thinned badly, and he has three catches for 15 yards over his last three games after that Week 3 breakout.
VEGA IOANE — OG, Baltimore Ravens. Baltimore lost 13–10 at Cleveland, scoring all ten of its points in the first quarter and nothing after.
JAKE SLAUGHTER — C, Los Angeles Chargers. The Chargers are 0–6, and national pieces are now openly calling for Mike McDaniel’s job. He keeps playing every snap at center, which is all the card needs.
AVIEON TERRELL — CB, Atlanta Falcons. Atlanta fell to 2–4 with a 31–23 loss to Chicago.
MAKAI LEMON — WR, Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles lost 25–14 to Carolina and are 2–4, a stunning collapse for a team that started 2–0.
Who sat out?
DERRICK MOORE — DE, Detroit Lions. Detroit was on its Week 6 bye. That is not a missed game, and he played in Weeks 4 and 5, so like Woods he needs only Week 7 for +3.
FERNANDO MENDOZA — QB, Las Vegas Raiders. Back to zero snaps. The game against Buffalo stayed close, 33–30, and Kirk Cousins went the distance, hitting Tre Tucker for a 44-yard touchdown in the final minutes. Last week’s debut really was a product of a blowout. He has missed two of October’s three games, which puts him on +1 whether he plays in Week 7 or not.
Injury report
JADARIAN PRICE — RB, Seattle Seahawks. Still on injured reserve, and his four-game minimum covers all of October. Zero for the month, as it has been since Week 4.
JORDYN TYSON — WR, New Orleans Saints. Still not activated, and he has not practiced once all season. He did travel with the Saints to Paris for the Week 7 game against Pittsburgh, which suggests his 21-day practice window may open this week. But the reporting points consistently to a Week 9 home debut against Cleveland: New Orleans has a bye in Week 8, and the Paris field is a question mark for a hamstring. If he plays in Paris, October pays him +1. If not, nothing.
The rest of the month
One week to go in October, Weeks 4 to 7:
- Three-for-three, needing only Week 7 for +3: Caleb Downs, Vega Ioane, Jake Slaughter, Arvell Reese, Avieon Terrell, Kenyon Sadiq, Anthony Hill, Makai Lemon and Max Iheanachor.
- Peter Woods and Derrick Moore: both two-for-two with their byes banked. Week 7 is all either needs, the easiest paths in the set.
- Fernando Mendoza: one-for-three, and +1 however Week 7 goes.
- Jadarian Price: zero for October. Jordyn Tyson: zero, unless he plays in Paris.
Eleven of the fourteen are one game away from a clean +3. Barring something unexpected this Sunday, October finishes far better than it looked when Price went on injured reserve.
Risers and fallers
- RiserArvell Reese — Top of the rookie defensive rankings and the league leader in solo tackles. The best card in the set.
- RiserAnthony Hill — A first win, seventh among defensive rookies, and the green dot in his defense.
- RiserMax Iheanachor — Four straight starts and a winning team. The job is settled.
- RiserPeter Woods — Bye banked on an unbeaten team. One game from +3.
- FallerKenyon Sadiq — Healthy again, but three catches for 15 yards in three games as the targets go elsewhere.
- FallerFernando Mendoza — Back to zero snaps in a close game. Last week was a blowout, not a change of role.
- WatchJordyn Tyson — Travelled to Paris but has not practiced. A Week 7 appearance is worth +1; Week 9 looks likelier.
