Attitude: match their defense, counter their offense
Rich Dean's rule for attitude: on offense, match the opponent's defense, and on defense, counter their offense. Against a conservative offense go Aggressive and blitz Often; against an aggressive one go Conservative and blitz Rare.
Attitude is the row of five helmets on both strategy screens, running from blue, the conservative side, to red, the aggressive side. Rich Dean's rule is that it is not "more aggressive, more big plays". What decides a game is how your attitude lines up against the opponent's, so it should change from one game to the next.
On offense, match their defense
Your offensive attitude follows the defense you are about to face:
- Their defense is Conservative: go Conservative, with a Game Manager at quarterback
- Their defense is Aggressive: go Aggressive, with a Pocket Passer
On defense, counter their offense
Your defensive attitude does the opposite of their offense:
- Their offense is Conservative: go Aggressive and set Blitzing to Often
- Their offense is Aggressive: go Conservative and set Blitzing to Rare
What each attitude sets
Once the attitude is chosen, Rich sets the rest of the offense to agree with it, and the blitz to agree with the defensive one:
- QB style: Game Manager when Conservative, which wants Intelligence. Pocket Passer when Aggressive, which wants Accuracy
- Passing depth: Short or Medium when Conservative, Medium or Long when Aggressive
- 4th & Short risk: Take high risk when Conservative, Take some risk when Aggressive
- Blitzing: Rare when Conservative, Often when Aggressive
4th & Short is the setting that reads backward. On a Conservative offense, Take high risk plays like a moderate setting and still kicks field goals. On an Aggressive offense the same setting turns reckless and almost never kicks, so Rich drops it to Take some risk.
When you cannot read them
If the read is unclear, Rich's fail-safe is an Aggressive defense with Blitzing on Rare. The same idea works the other way round: if you go Conservative on defense and are not sure of it, set Blitzing to Often. Screens stay on Rare either way, unless the opponent blitzes a lot.
Telling which attitude an opponent runs comes from their box scores, and How to scout an opponent from their box scores walks through it.
These settings come from Rich Dean's Football Head Coach 27 videos on YouTube, and imswimduck gathered them into a cheat sheet for the community. The game publishes none of them, so use them as a starting point and see how they hold up in your own games.
