How to scout an opponent from their box scores
Open the opponent's last three games, losses first. Their completion rate, yards per catch, sacks and penalties show their offense, and who beat them, and how, shows their defense. Rich Dean turns both into your attitude.
Rich Dean's pre-game routine starts on your league screen. Tap Compare User, open the opponent's last three games, and start with the ones they lost. The Game Statistics tab of each game report has what you need.
Read their offense
Their offense shows directly in their own passing line. Rich reads it like this:
- Aggressive: a low completion rate with lots of incompletions, 10 or more yards per completion, and more sacks and penalties. Lines like 19 of 33, or 16 of 46
- Conservative: a high completion rate, short gains per catch, and few sacks or penalties. Lines like 24 of 30, or 16 of 21
That sets your defense. Against an aggressive offense, go Conservative and blitz Rare. Against a conservative one, go Aggressive and blitz Often.
Read their defense
Their defense never shows directly, so Rich reads it through the games of the teams that played them, losses first:
- A conservative offense beat them, with a high completion rate and a controlled, comfortable win: their defense is Conservative, so go Conservative
- An aggressive offense got shut down, with lots of incompletions, three or four sacks or more, turnovers and penalties: their defense is Conservative, so go Conservative
- An aggressive offense blew them out, with big plays and few sacks taken: their defense is Aggressive, so go Aggressive
With no recent losses to read, look at which attitude their opponents played and which one kept winning. Rush-heavy teams are the hardest to read.
Weigh a loss by who it was against
Check how strong the team that beat them was before you read too much into it. Team OVR is the average of all 53 cards, starters and bench alike, so a team starting 90s over a thin bench can show the same number as one with 83s everywhere. A loss to a much stronger lineup says more about the cards than the settings. Team Builder works the average out for your own 53.
When the read is unclear
Even good players read an opponent wrong, which is what the fail-safe is for. When the games disagree, Rich goes Aggressive on defense with Blitzing on Rare, and checks again before the next game rather than leaving it set. The settings that follow from each read are in Attitude: match their defense, counter their offense.
These settings come from Rich Dean's Football Head Coach 27 videos on YouTube, and imswimduck gathered them into a cheat sheet for the community. The game publishes none of them, so use them as a starting point and see how they hold up in your own games.
