Investment Watch #1: Kamari Lassiter
Every Prospect is one playoff berth away from +5, and most of the class is a coin flip. Houston is priced tenth favourite for the Super Bowl, which makes Lassiter the one whose boost the market half expects already — at 650K against a 4.75M comparison.
This is the first of a series on cards worth holding rather than spending. Not the best cards, and not the cheapest ones: the ones where what a card costs today and what it could be worth by January have come apart, and there is a reason to think the gap closes.
Prospects are built for exactly that. Every card in the rarity carries the same open question — does the real player make the Playoffs? If they do, the card takes a one-time +5 to every rating, permanently. If they do not, it stays as pulled. That makes the whole class a bet on sixteen different football teams, and most of those bets are close to a coin flip or worse.
Kamari Lassiter is the exception. Houston is priced tenth favourite to win the Super Bowl outright at 19/1, and you do not sit inside the top ten of thirty-two without being built for January. This is not a team hoping to sneak in on the last weekend; it is one the odds already expect to be there. His 89 is the same bet as every other Prospect, on much better terms.
Devon Witherspoon, the same rating at the same position, on 17 September. That is the floor: what Lassiter is worth if Houston miss.
Where copies are trading while the card finds its price. The bottom of that range is a corner at its floor with a free bet attached.
The cheapest of five Denzel Wards listed, and the only 94 corner the market can sell — the other two are a PTC reward and a Weekend League card, and neither set ever lists. Lassiter at 89 plus the boost is a 94, which is the tier Ward sits in.
Buy at the top of that range and the boost returns five times what you paid. Buy at the bottom and it is seven. In coins, somewhere between 3.8M and 4.1M on a card that costs under a million today — and the reason the spread is that wide is that nobody has settled on what the card is worth yet, which is the whole opportunity.
What kills it is Houston missing. Nothing is locked until the final week of the regular season, odds move, and a new set landing between now and then can reprice the 94 tier underneath you. Treat the 4.75M as what the tier is worth today rather than what it will be worth in January.
The shape is what makes it worth flagging: if the bet loses, you are holding a corner worth roughly what you paid for it. There are not many bets in this game where the downside is your money back.
Buy the roster spot, not the card. And treat this as one reading of a market that moves daily, not as advice.
