What every stat on a card does
Every card shows three stats, and which three depends on the position. The game ties each one to a kind of play: a receiver’s Agility, Speed and Catching belong to quick, medium and deep passes, and a linebacker’s Speed is for blitzing.
Every card shows three stats under its rating, and which three depends on the position. A quarterback is rated on Accuracy, Athleticism and Intelligence, a defensive tackle on Strength, Awareness and Tackling. The game describes each one on a player’s Details tab, and it describes the same stat differently at different positions.
Offense
What the game says each stat is for, position by position:
- Quarterback: Accuracy for passing, Athleticism for running as well as passing, Intelligence for managing the game
- Running back: Speed for runs to the outside, Power for running through the middle, Vision for seeing the gap to run through
- Wide receiver: Agility to get open after a quick pass, Speed to find an opening for medium passes, Catching for deep passes
- Tight end: Blocking to help the line, Catching to work as a receiver, Athleticism to do both, which keeps the defense guessing
- Center, guard and tackle: Pass Blocking to protect the pocket, Run Blocking to open gaps, Agility to help the ball carrier get outside or through them
Defense
The defense reads the same way:
- Defensive end and tackle: Strength to hold up against the run, Awareness to mix up their approach and stay unpredictable, Tackling to stop the quarterback getting the pass away
- Linebacker: Speed for blitzing, Tackling to help the line against the run, Awareness to cover the field
- Cornerback and safety: Speed to stay with the man in coverage, Tackling to take down any player, Awareness to keep eyes on the zone
Special teams
Kickers and punters share two stats. Kick Power sends the ball farther and Kick Accuracy puts it where it was meant to go. A kicker’s third is Faking, to trick the opponent, and a punter’s is Hang Time, how long the punt stays in the air.
Reading two cards at the same rating
The same word does a different job at different positions. Speed takes a running back outside, gets a receiver open on a medium pass, sends a linebacker on a blitz and keeps a cornerback with his man. Compare a stat only between cards at the same position.
Within a position, the three stats say what a card is built for. Two 88 receivers can be a deep threat and a quick-pass option, and two 85 running backs can be an outside runner and a between-the-tackles one. Every position page in the Player Database carries the game’s three descriptions above its cards, starting with the wide receivers.
