The Offensive and Defensive Strategy screens, setting by setting
Rich Dean's settings for both strategy screens: push the mindset slider 70 to 80 percent one way, pick one pass type and one run type, keep coverage on Zone or Man, and swap between three defensive setups for pass, run and balanced teams.
Both strategy screens open with a mindset slider and an attitude, then the field preferences, then the position roles and special movements. Rich Dean's settings for each are below. Attitude is the one choice that changes every game, and Attitude: match their defense, counter their offense covers it.
Offensive Strategy
Rich's rule for offense is to commit: one pass type, one run type, never balanced.
- Offensive Mindset: 70 to 80 percent to one side, rushing or passing. Never around 50/50
- Passing Preference: Short, Medium or Long, matched to your receivers
- Running Preference: Outside, Zone or Power, matched to your running back
- Quarterback: Pocket Passer or Game Manager, from your attitude
- Running back: Running
- Tight end: Catching for a passing offense, Blocking for a running one
- 4th & Short risk: Take high risk on a Conservative offense
- Screens: Rare
Defensive Strategy
Defense runs the other way. Rich wants it good at everything, so the setup follows the opponent:
- Defensive Mindset: about 80 percent toward the opponent's tendency
- Primary Coverage: Zone or Man, never Mixed
- Blitzing: Rare on a Conservative defense, Often on an Aggressive one
- Linebacker role: Coverage, Run Support or Mixed
- Defensive line role: Pass Rush or Run Support, never Mixed
Three defenses for three kinds of opponent
Rich keeps three defensive setups and swaps between them before each game:
- Pass defense: mindset about 80 percent pass, Coverage linebackers, Pass Rush line
- Run defense: mindset about 80 percent run, Run Support linebackers, Run Support line
- Balanced: mindset near 50/50, Mixed linebackers, and the line on Pass Rush or Run Support
Linebackers are the only position Rich ever sets to Mixed. On the line and in the secondary, pick one.
Keep a run-stopping base
Dime, quarter and prevent formations are weak against the run. Rich keeps a 4-3 base and only swaps formations against pure deep passers.
These settings come from Rich Dean's Football Head Coach 27 videos on YouTube, and imswimduck gathered them into a cheat sheet for the community. The game publishes none of them, so use them as a starting point and see how they hold up in your own games.
